Margaret, if you’re reading this
I’m on the edge of the world…
Last week I promised I’d have a song for you about a volcano from a new perspective, and here it is. Margaret is a story I imagined about the last man alive from the HMS Erebus’ Franklin Expedition (I wrote about this in last week’s newsletter). Although all the crew members abandoned the ships, I liked to picture the last man alive (after all the lead poisoning, hypothermia and cannibalism) crawling back to the ship and writing in a journal to his beloved.
Erebus the volcano is on the opposite pole from the wreckage of the HMS Erebus, but is named after it because of a southern expedition the ship took. I pictured that the man scrawling in the journal remembers that day the volcano was spotted, and now the ghost of it is haunting him in a way as he spends his last moments on Earth, freezing to death.
Personally I’m not 100% convinced that this song is gonna make the final cut of songs on the geology album, but a demo is a demo is a demo and it’s all worth something, anyway.
Here’s the lyrics for a read-along:
Margaret, if you’re reading this
I’m on the edge of the world
Frozen on the Erebus
Pouring it out in a journal
Margaret, I’m serious
Think I’m the last man alive
Everyone else on Erebus
Is a faint little line in the snow
And I remember that day
One pole apart
We sailed round the mountain
The mouth is on fire
So much to say
No-one to say it to
Margaret the air is cold and I love you
Mar-ga-ret, I hallucinate
There is red in the sky
All the boys and the bones
Are lined up in a row
Like we tried to do it delicate
So nobody would ever know
Is it God that I see
Is he mad at me?
And I remember that day
One pole apart
We sailed round the mountain
The mouth is on fire
So much to say
No-one to say it to
Margaret the air is cold and I love you
And if I see the other side
I hope that it’s alright
I know we were named for darkness
But I want a bit of light
Yeah I remember that day
One pole apart
We sailed round the mountain
The mouth is on fire
So much to say
No-one to say it to
Margaret the air is cold
Margaret I’m letting go
Margaret I’m not alone ‘cause I love you
Let me know what you think! Feedback is actually appreciated here ‘cause I don’t know if this has potential or not.
actual music news
My music video for Happy New Year is out!!! It was all done on one take with literally no budget, my boyfriend filmed it, my friends starred in it, we made it happen.
Also Happy New Year was featured on Andy J Pizza’s Creative Pep Talk podcast, so if you’ve joined the bandwagon (of… me) from there, HELLO AND WELCOME. Also the episode itself is very good and worth a listen for all creatives struggling with their social media approach at the moment.
things i liked
✶ I finished watching Neon Genesis Evangelion this week and I was actually surprised by the weirdly hopeful tone at the end? Even though it’s like… bleak
✶ I am absolutely infatuated with this artist and everyone needs to listen to this song. Does it have casio drums? Yes. I do love Casio drums? Yes.
✶ This is also so good!!! So good! So nice! So uplifting!
✶ Get on yer poet shirt!
That’s yer lot!!!
Like I said, if you love or hate the song please let me know. Actually, if you hate it, don’t say that. Say something more… diplomatic. But still, should this go on the geology album? Or is it just filler?
Have a good weekend and you are GOOD and GREAT, here is your prize for that
