Geeking out over this post. I'm such an old soul and radio nerd. This inspires me to create a list of my radio show and stations recommendations.

To my distress, the BBC is yanking Sounds for the rest of the world (and whether I can still listen to 6 Music here in the Philippines remains unclear).

But radio all the way, and radio all the way!

nooooo i did wonder if the BBC Sounds point would be redundant to my international audience. fingers crossed you can still get your 6 Music fix somehow!

Well, there will be a new BBC app but it only gives us streams to Radio 4 and the World Service.

Supposedly we can still listen to the music stations on third-party apps (I primarily use TuneIn) but we'll see... they're just rolling it out, but we'll see!

Brava, Olivia!

“Ask a friend to make you a mix CD …” - Or maybe even a mixTAPE

“Go on the Internet Archive and find some obscure audio … “- Would you believe I met a collaborator because I was searching for experimental jazz and found his group’s album there? (Orchestra Eclettica e Sincretista, by the way.)

I use the library for CDs for the car. Inter-library loan for CDs the library doesn’t carry. Hoopla for streaming.

what a list!!! thank you 🤘🏼🙌🏼 in middle and high school (cd listening era) i had a theory that track 7 was always the best. in a few more years ill be in my midlife crisis era i think and i already know part of that will include re-buying my whole cd collection again 😅 (i got rid of it when i thought streaming was saving the world!)

i'm gonna have to look into this Track 7 theory with my fav albums!

i seriously want to buy a disc drive or hi-fi because my laptop no longer has one. i need to get my CD collection up, too!

Excellent, creative post, with some great new ideas. Thanks!

Regarding 32. Does ‘A Mighty Wind’ count as a documentary? Watched it last weekend (brought the dvd up from our basement), and I was reminded of how great the songs are. -T

I haven’t even read the article yet and already know it’s amazing, I loooovvveee buying CDs & vinyl and I’ve been actively using an iPod since 2021.

I still use streaming services to find new & play new music along with magazines and online recommendations but my favourite music is always played offline on my iPods ^^

I have a cd playing just now, I had your new release on earlier so just continued with the flow. I have vinyl and a Sony mp3 player I listen to a lot. The MP3 player has .5,000 songs on it of many genres so nice to put on shuffle, a lot purchased through Bandcamp.

If you wanted a 51st, and I am sure you don't, try booking a holiday, ask a local for a food recommendation, go along and read the menu intro. If you are incredibly lucky you will have booked to go to Menai town, have been recommended the Freckled Angels restaurant be intrigued and go straight to Bandcamp and pick up Ren Gill's album the restaurant was named after. It is excellent, (1990's and Dominoes and two particularly outstanding tracks).

In other news I heard your name mentioned on a Substack live interview with Laura Kidd / Penfriend.

You restaurant story totally reminded me of when I went on holiday, yeaaaaars ago, to Jamaica. We were down on the beach and three men with guitars and a cajon were singing songs, one of them being 'Montego Bay'. I instantly fell in love with that song. We bought a cassette off them and I have no idea where it is now, but I remember listening to it when I got home and feeling sad that the recorded version wasn't the same as what I heard on that beach. There was something energetic and magical about that version I heard.

Yes I listened in on some of that Substack Live as well with Seth/Penfriend!

Glad you're enjoying the album, Kevin. Sounds like you've got a good setup!

I recently bought a refurbished iPod so that I could have a portable device for only listening to music. Originally I wanted to get a discman and relive high school, but they're bulky and would be hard for me to carry around at work, which is where I listen to music the most. We also have an old CD player at home that we're using to expose our daughter to the music we listened to when we were younger. She LOVES the novelty of it, even when the CDs skip. It's really been helping me rediscover my true taste in music.

I still have Spotify, but haven't been relying on it as much lately. There is still a lot of music I've discovered and loved in the past several years that I don't physically own, and use Spotify to listen to. I'm going to build on my old collection of CDs and cassettes slowly.

I love that -- one of my earliest memories is putting on CDs in my living room and selecting the track number of my favourite song on each album from my parent's collection: Steely Dan, Yazoo, Pavarotti, and the Oklahoma! Soundtrack haha.

I've been collecting cassettes too! My boombox needs a service though, it's started to slooooowwwww dooowwwwnnnnn when playing tapes.

Definitely some of my earliest memories too! I think it's fascinating how music can carry such strong memories even when you're very young.

Our CD player probably needs to be serviced as well because it sometimes has to think really hard to start playing a CD. But I almost find that charming about the listening experience.
