✨ All I’ve ever known
Is waiting, watching, wishing, hoping
Let me go where rivers go✨
Hello hello hi hi hi! My next single from my geology album is OUT TODAY and this one is one of my favourites!!! Welcome: Cascade!
This one is a real head-swayer. I wanted to create this kind of 90’s Americana feel, something nostalgic, with that waltzy time signature and jangling guitar.
If you love this song, add it to your playlists, share this post, make a HULLABALOO.
‘Cascade’ is about deciding to change who you are, and going on that exciting, tumultuous journey to become something different. Later on I’m gonna share a story from my own life where I underwent this experience. But for now, let’s take a look at some artefacts from the songwriting process…
🎚️ Notes From The Studio
Fun fact: the word ‘cascade’ features in three different songs in this album. Because ‘cascade’ is the way the sediment tumbles down the mountain, but also the Cascades are a mountain range (of volcanoes! some extinct, some not) in the Pacific Northwest, where two of the album’s stories take place.
In the studio as we were recording these tracks I found Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, which is a deck of cards featuring prompts or ideas for the music-making process.
This one seemed fitting:
The most exciting part of the process with this song was creating all the strings and extra textures which elevated the emotional stakes of the song. I shared a little snippet of what the song sounded like as I was adding in these parts from the comfort of my own home. For anyone interested in what the different layers of this song sounds like, take a listen to this:

💌 Up Next: Liner Notes
Next week I’ll be sharing my take on album liner notes— this is a series which shines a light on each song from my album, Typical Forever. Liner Notes shows the story behind making these songs, things that couldn’t fit in a CD booklet or a Bandcamp credits section. This is my process behind writing each song: the lyrics, the music, and everything in between.
Thank you for being on this journey with me. I recently played this song at the Geological Society for their event, Earth’s Canvas, which was a conference and concert featuring art and earth sciences. That was a very, very special moment for me. And I’m so glad you’re here continuing the specialness!! May the specialness never end!
Down from the mountaintops, rolling into the glittering sea!!!
