🦋 you’re into lepidopterology, but you just say ‘moths’ 🦋
It’s pretty surreal to be writing this, as it’s been A JOURNEY to get to this moment, but I can finally say…
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧ THE FIRST SINGLE OFF MY DEBUT ALBUM IS OUT TODAY! *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Yes, the first single from Typical Forever, my geology-themed concept album (no, seriously), is out today, and it’s called ‘Earthquake Room’.
This is an amazing moment and if you see me in the street today and I’m not smilin’ awa’ then please throw a shoe at me. I am so bad at remembering to truly FEEL and CELEBRATE the good moments, so I am going to make doubly sure that I do that today.
Add it to your playlists, share this post, make a HULLABALOO. Let’s get this song in front of people’s eyes and ears today so they’re like “wow, everyone is really going crazy for this Earthquake Room song”
So, what IS ‘Earthquake Room’ all about?
It’s a song about a date I went on to the Natural History Museum in London, and the earthquake simulator, which I like to refer to as the ‘Earthquake Room’.
More on this story later. For now, let’s take a look at some artefacts from the songwriting process…
🎚️ Notes From The Studio
Here’s the initial notes I put next to this song, when I had just finished making the demo:
I made this track with this Youtube drum loop and my Casio keyboard. To be honest I want to retain a lot of what’s going on in this demo and just enhance it. Something I was listening to a lot whilst making this song was Emperor X’s album called ‘Western Teleport.’
Obviously the Youtube drum loop was replaced by an actual drummer, but funnily enough most of the Casio keyboard parts I recorded for the demo stayed in the song. There’s a thing that’s called demo magic, and it often can be an affliction, where things just don’t sound as good as they did in the demo because the demo was inhibited. I liked the looseness and freedom of the keyboard in my demo, so I kept ‘em. Sue me!!!
Also please enjoy these notes I wrote for myself when recording this song, to remind me to stay in tune:
A couple months ago I posted a video which showed the studio day we had when recording this song, so if you haven’t had a look already, now is the perfect time to check it out:
🎧 Listening Kit
If you haven’t listened to the song yet, let me get you in the mood. Here’s what your listening kit will require:
a wobbly surface
packets of cereal (which you can throw around your listening space)
displays of pinned butterflies and moths
the phone number of someone you went on one date with
And here’s a picture to get you in the mood:

💌 Up Next: Liner Notes
Next week I’ll be sharing my take on album liner notes— this is a series which shines a light on each song from my album, Typical Forever. Liner Notes shows the story behind making these songs, things that couldn’t fit in a CD booklet or a Bandcamp credits section. This is my process behind writing each song: the lyrics, the music, and everything in between.
Thank you for being on this journey with me. I’m very excited because I have lots of fun things planned for this newsletter during this release period. And if you’re wondering where we’re at with the overall album release, please refer to the status board, below:
